1995 tbird 4.6 v8 auto trans problem

Asked by tsloop7 Mar 20, 2015 at 01:50 PM about the 1995 Ford Thunderbird LX RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

car was running great at 50 mph.then, revs went up,like car went out of gear.had a whining noise from under car.shifted back to 2nd gear, whining went away, drove rest of way to work and home in 2nd gear,35 mph.reverse gear was fine.whining noise only when stick is in D position and only changes from 1st to 2nd gear.fluid level is fine,no burnt smell.this rebuilt trans has been in car probably 10-15 yrs.i'm guessing trans needs another rebuild.

thanks for the comeback, tom.yea,i checked the cables, bushings, etc.all looks good there.that whining noise when the stick is in D makes me think I've lost 3rd and OD.when stick is in 2,no whining.shifts from 1st to 2nd like normal.but, whatever,i don't have 3rd or OD anymore.i can put another tranny in it myself and part of me wants to.but, the 4.6 has got close to 300k.not sure if it's worth putting $1600 in tranny, then the engine has to be replaced at some point.again, thanks for comeback!
