Intermittent no crank no start
Asked by MJ4KLJ Jun 23, 2019 at 03:13 PM about the 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Jeep will start right 50x in a row and run no
problems.
Occasionally it will have no start no crank issue.
Acts like t would if battery cables were loose and
would Just make a click sound.
Try again 3-4 times and will usually start as if
nothing was ever wrong.
I have changed starter (for separate issue)
Battery and alt checked out good.
I thought it might of been the yellow wire had
corrosion that goes to starter so I also snipped it
and put new connection on.
Thought I fixed it but to no avail.

I'm no mechanic but you might have a dead spot in your starter. Smack it with a hammer it may jiggle it enough to start. You can have someone else listen to see if the starter is trying to engage. The throw out gear (which engages the flywheel) may be stuck or stripped. Might be able to crawl under and see. I'd just get a different starter. Also may be missing teeth on the flywheel randomly stopping at starter. I've had all these problems with lawn mowers I use to tinker with. Hope this helps.
Find problem. Seems to to be lack of grounding issue. Small braided ground that goes from hood to chassis was snapped. Replaced it and also added battery cable gauge ground to alternator to body and now it starts every time no problem.
MJ, do you happen to have a video or any photos of what and how you did what you did? I've replaced the alternator, battery, starter and still the same issue exists for me.
i TURN ON IGNITION SWITCH AND NO NO ENGAGEMENT. WHEN COLD IT STARTS FINE
