The VSS does control the speedometer and odometer, but it just has a little gear on the end of it that drops in. When a vehicle shifts hard I first think of valve body or accumulator. To me they're both unrelated, but I'm just a hobbyist.

(clean area well before and don't get dirt in hole)sensor located above rear axel gear hub held by a bolt, disconnect wire if a connect ion remove bolt lift sensor and replace....

I had the same problem, I own a 94 , sensor related, and yes it’s is related with odometer
