Like any other car, make sure it has been serviced and in this case by a BMW dealer. One thing you must must check is that the car has had a service done after 1000 miles, yes 1000 miles. If this service was missed please walk away. Part of the service an oil change is required. The value of the car will be lower if this service was missed. In my experience, you can do a little better on the price. There is a service due at 1200 miles which replaces all fluids which is mandatory. I picked up a 2005 convertible M3 with Navigation for under 26000 with only 35,000 miles no accidents. Do some research as there are some pretty pricey services for this vehicle including a valve adjustment.

M vehicles require maintenance beyond that of standard Bimmers. Even though the e46 you are looking at is an inline 6, it is a high performance engine with pricey parts. If you have never worked on one, the first thing I would do id find a reputable mechanic and have him inspect the vehicle. Avoid the dealership and save yourself over 50% in labor costs.
