Acceleration Problem

Asked by Elijah Jan 14, 2025 at 10:39 PM about the 2006 Toyota Corolla CE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla 4D CE. Today I had an issue with the
accelerator. I was getting off the highway and had slowed down to get off the
exit but then sped up to change lanes, in doing so my car got up to 3500 RPM
but then capped there and almost felt like it bogged down and wouldn't
accelerate anymore, so I pulled over and popped the hood. I saw there was
some excess exhaust that was coming out, my car rarely puts out visible
exhaust in idle. Checked everything and the weird thing is my oil level in my
engine was higher than is was supposed to be, even after leaving it off for a
bit. Drained the levels a bit so it would be closer to normal at outside temp and
started it back up. No issue starting up or idling, so attempted to drive it
around the lot and it was fine at lower RPMS, so drove it to O'Reilly's since the
CEL came on and the MAINT REQ light flashed on and off at me as well but
then went off. O'Reilly's ran the test and the two error codes that came back
were for my MAF sensor and the torque converter clutch solenoid saying it
was in the stored position. The car still starts and runs but won't accelerate
past 3500 RPMS while in drive, but will rev fine in park, it still drives at lower
RPMS, albeit cautiously, any help or insight with this would be great! IE I do
90% of the work on the car myself.

MAF code, check air filter and clean the MAF sensor first and see if the problem goes away, if not then you may need to check the waveform of the sensor to see if it is responding, if that all looks good then test the fuel pressure and flow and the exhaust system backpressure.

I recently replaced the MAF sensor since it was the original with the car and had gone bad. However, I just checked the MAF intake filter, and it was kind of dirty, so I'm going to pick up a new one to see if that fixes the issue. Do you have any recommendations for cleaners to use for cleaning the MAF sensor?

MAF cleaner. Your local parts store will have it in stock. I use CRC brand.

Update: I took it to a garage today to have it looked at and they said it seems to be the torque converter clutch solenoid issue. I replaced that part recently, but I did it with an after- market piece, not OEM. They said that could be the issue and the part may be malfunctioning keeping it from getting up to higher speeds consistently. I am looking to order the OEM part but am having a hard time finding the actual OEM part for sale that isn't after-market, and the part from Toyota itself is way too expensive. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I learned long ago when it came to sensors and solenoids always go with OEM components. However, on older vehicles like yours that is not always doable, so then you need to find the manufactured part number on most Asian vehicles it is a ND or Denso number sometimes with that number a good parts person can cross it over to another ND or Denso number that will work. But there are times when nothing works and so then if your desperate you reach out to a wrecking yard with the number and see if they have or can get one used, of course a used electrical part has no warranty so if it doesn't work your stuck with it. If you have to go that route, then see if there is a Toyota dismantler in your area and use them. HTH

You may just have to bite the bullet and go with the high-priced Toyota part.

Thank you for your response! Update for anyone else reading with the same P0741 code issue, for my car specifically it was my torque converter that had gone bad and the sensor error was indicating that there was an error there and assumed that the sensor itself was bad, but it was indeed the converter that had gone bad so ended up needing a rebuild on the tranny, cost about $1500 total for the parts and labor.
