How long since a tune-up? I guess this is a high mileage engine? Automatic or manual tranny? With a high mileage engine sometimes it will idle fine in park or neutral because no load on the engine. When you put it in gear there is a load on the engine. If idle in drive is the problem, is there an idle set screw on the throttle linkage, if so, up the idle, then see if driveable. In the old days on a highmileage engine, I'd set the idle in drive, at least it was driveable. Yeah, when you put it neutral or park, the engine was racing. Other than an engine overhaul, I don't know what else you could do? Your problem might be some other issue?
