My question is i have a 99 monte but it has the 3.1 what is a suitable replacement with a minimum of tinkering needed w/o going back to a 3.1 again?

keep your 99 monte the way it is. Replacing the engine is just a bad idea. If you put in something too big you are talking stupid money and replacing basically the entire drive train. Transmission and just about everything related to the fuel delivery system. If you put in something only semi-bigger, then you won't see much of a power improvement at all and you'll be wasting time and money for a very modest gain. If power is what you're after then I would suggest bolt ons. Cold air intakes, high flow exhaust, and even turbo/super chargers if you want to go more expensive and have bigger gains. If you want huge power then look into something like a 99-04 v8 camero because for the price it will take you to adjust your 99 monte to hold a engine worth doing a swap, you could buy a new car.
