Question type: Maintenance & Repair
How much would it cost to have a 2004 monte carlo ss
transmission rebuilt. The transmission itself the price. Also
the price of labor. When you ask trim below I know it's an
SS but not sure on the difference between SS FWD AND SS

Make sure you get the right transmission, roughly 2 grand for a basic rebuilt with a core charge. Labor is all over the place, but average is 15 to 1800 bucks. That is independent prices. Trust me you don't want the dealership prices. But consider the vehicle itself, it's old, is it really worth that kind of money to repair?

Don't go cheap , you'll be sorry . One little spring , one little clamp not installed properly and the tranny will not last . The builder has to know what they're doing
If you've lost overdrive and torque converter clutch (TCC) lock in, it might be cheaper to have your current transmission repaired by a reputable shop local to you. To replace the transmission with a rebuilt one you've looking at probably around $3,500 to $4,500 total. This is a major job and you should be choosey about where you have it done! The whole subframe must be removed, you'll want to replace the transmission and lower engine mounts while you're right there. If the drive axles and shifter cable are questionable you might want to replace them as well. The, very large, bolts that secure the subframe cannot be reused. They must be replaced. If the front sway bar and links are original you might want to replace them as well. The original sway bar is hollow and will crack and break sooner or later. Just a few things to consider. Jim
Ok thanks I should of said prior it was rebuilt be for I purchased it for $1,800 about 4 years ago and the way I drove it, it lasted about 6 months. I know it's not worth fixing but my dad is insisting to rebuild while I'm talking the kid into an intimidator which she really wants but we're about to get it shipped here without test driving it. Which is also risky, but we not trying to drive over 400 miles for a car. Guess we'll take our chances on the intimidator. Thanks for the answers they seem to compare to what I was looking at last year i just needed another opinion.
