Transmission will shift hard from first to second when accelerating, most of the
time. If driving slowly, it usually doesn't. Will a fluid change fix that?

If the fluid is brown and burnt smelling then you can drop the pan and change fluid and filter it may help .. See how much metal is in the pan , there may be a fuzzy magnet already there . At that age it may be time for a rebuild , find a good shop , don't look for a bargain .
If might but usually you wind up needing to replace the shift solenoids to cure the problem. Replace the filters while your there.
Personally I wouldn't worry about it. My 03 S10 pick up has been doing the same thing for years. Changing the fluid and filter might make matters worse. I'd just keep an eye on the fluid level and top off as needed. Unless it's leaking badly. I'd also be cautious about putting a lot of money in a 23 year old vehicle. Hope that helps! Jim
