Any ideas on engine that is smooth if you ease open gasbut has nasty clatter or knock if you open throttle quickly. ..was told might be collapsed lifter. ..found one not oiling. .replaced it...no good

You may have bad oil pressure to your lifters, or bad lifters all around. If no work has been done the the heads, I'd at least have them pulled and checked. If your not getting oil to the lifters, you may have some issues with the cam also. Cams are made of soft metal and need the oil to keep them lubricated so they will not scour or wear unevenly. What you're describing, is lifter problems, maybe even a broken rocker arm bolt allowing the lifters to float.
Word of caution. Many times an old engine gets a head rework job done. This increases compression in the chambers. The increased pressure causes ring failure. So if the heads are reworked, make sure the rings and pistons are checked also. It's a simple thing of doing a dollar job, which leads to a $10 job, leading to a $100 job that would of been only $50 total if done all together the first time. So be wise and ask a lot of questions if this is the way you go.
