I have a silverado z71 4 x 4 that all of the sudden locked up and won't go
forward.  It will go in reverse fine and move but it is frozen and won't go
forward.  Is the the transmission or transfer case or could it be something
else?

It rolls but it feels like the front brakes and on and resist it.

Did you ever figure out the issue? My 2010 Silverado Z71 is doing a similar thing. When first started and put into drive it won't roll forward, and often takes some significant pushing on the pedal to almost "pop" it forward. I can hear something somewhere in the middle make a bit of a bang, and then I'm able to move forward. Its almost like the front brakes won't release, however that doesn't explain the sound coming from behind me (in the drivers seat).
