Question type: Maintenance & Repair
my truck wont come out of 4 low and iv checked the motor and the connections and wires all the way to the motor and everything seems to be fine. the switch in the dash is good i put a new one in for just shits and giggles and it did the same thing blink the whole time and does nothing. wondering what i should do next running out of options there is one thing that i noticed in the cluster in the dash that when u put in in neutral that it doesnt register and it looks like that when u do put it in neutral that it looks like it jumps right back to park but doesnt register anything. but i can put it in drive and it registers and then i can put it in reverse and it registers and then put it back in neutral then there is absolutely nothing registering so i need help i dont know what to do now help me

Neutral is required for shifts in and out of low range. If it never detects neutral it wont shift. Press the 4hi button and shift R>N>D>N>R and repeat. Maybe it will catch on at some point.
I had this problem. Was trying to back a trailer uphill last night and put it in 4 Lo and it wouldn't come out. I must have put it in a bind. I tried this "R>N>D>N>R and repeat" method and kept pushing the 4 Hi button and finally "CLUNK" it went into 4 Hi. Then it was easy to go into 2 Hi. Thank you so much!!!!
TRYED HOLDING THE 4 HI AND MOVING THE SHIFTER R,N,D,N,R, AND FINALLY CLUNK IT WENT IN TO 4HI THEN 2HI THANK ALL FOR YOUR HELP L.J.
Thanks everyone who posted this also help me with my 2007 tahoe That was having same problem.

I know it has been a while since anyone has posted to this but my 2007 Siverado 1500 got stuck in 4L last night and I googled it, found this string and did it and with some pursueding with bumping it while going R,N,D,N,R,N,D about 7 or 8 consecutive times it did work, I just wanted to thank everyone for this, I have 2 deer in the back of my truck and have to take them 40 miles to the processor this morning and don't have any other way to do it, so thanks you all are life savers
Worked Great on my 2008 Silverado, I was about to remove the actuator. Saved me a trip under my truck.

I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado stuck in 4wd. I tryed that R,N,D,N,R,N,D about 7 or 8 consecutive times and it worked. Awesomr and THANK YOU very much Jack Barrington, NH 3/15/2017
my 03 serria got stuck in 4low and I tried the R,N,D,N,R,N,D, and it didn't work..... it was deffinetly in a bind, reason it didn't work is because my motor switch locked up when it locked into 4 low. the transfer shifts fine but the motor is shot
hello every one just bought my 2001 Tahoe at auction was drivivg it home and the steering felt strange when i would turn a corner look to the left and saw it was in 4low tried putting it in 2hi and would not go so i asked my best friend MR google and up poped you all with the same problem and answer tride it and it worded driving fine now best 300$ tahoe i ever got thank you all for the answer to my problem
i disconnected the battery on my 2008 chevy and reconnected after 5 minutes with switch in two hi it worked as well but i will try this if it happens again.
The 2nd time my truck had this problem none of this helped, I went under my truck with a rubber mallet and smacked the housing near and around the actuator. made no sense at first but when I went to switch it back to 2 wheel drive it moved over like nothing was ever wrong.
Worked today just fine.Like Duh!
I ended up having to replace the transfer case shift motor again.... Anybody know where to get a drive shaft for 05 Silverado 5.3l crew cab 4x4 without breaking the bank?
Thank you I have been messing with that thing for 2 hours. 1 minute of r-n-d-n-r-n-d and Bamm....Thanks again
My wife drove my truck last night in snow, didn't realize she put it in 4L and drove. She called me and I couldn't get it out, and had to drive it home at 20 miles an hour. Tried the R N D N R and it popped out on one try, Thank you so much.
I think it's a shame we spend top dollar why did they change this put it back to Manuel shift and locking hubs
The internet always seems to pull through. All I had to do was put my 05 Suburban into neutral and press the 4HIGH and ‘clunk’ it went. Shifted into 2WD as easy as ‘1-2-3’
Everyone is talking about a button. My 2004 Silverado does not have a button. It is a manual on the floor. It is stuck in 4 wheel drive and i need to pull a horse trailer today! Can somebody please help!!
You have to disconnect the trailer connection if it’s hooked up. Don’t know why that works...
Yes that did the trick, on my 2005 chevy silverado 1500 that you so much
My GMC has a manual transmission. The R-N-D-N-D-N trick won't work. Now what?
thank you i got a little scared when it wouldn't shift out of low ..recently replaced rear and front diff on my tahoe so automatically assumed the worst about transfer case thanks again
THANK YOU All! It worked for us! We were camping at the coast, got stuck in the sand, put our 2003 Silverado in 4low, got out of the sand but couldn't get out of 4L. We googled the problem at the campground and it worked!!! It saved these two senior's camping trip!
Thanks for the answer. We've had a lot of snow here in Michigan in mid-April, and I've been plowing my driveway so I was using 4-hi. Yesterday it was really heavy so I put it in 4-lo. This morning it wouldn't come out of 4-lo using the normal push of the button. I tried the R-N- D-N-R-N-D routine. It took several times - maybe a dozen shifts - but it finally shifted to 4-hi, and then I was able to put it into AWD.
This worked for my Avalanche. And I was just prepping to bring it to the dealer which would have cost me $$$ for a 5 minute fix. Thanks.
You the man Andrew, I thought I was screwed, your remedy worked, thanks bud
Hey Andrew....I've spent HOURS screwing around with the 4WD switches after being stuck in 4 WD LO .... your simple suggestion P-R-N-D-R worked on the first try!!!! Couldn't believe it. It is 13 degrees here in Michigan and I thought everything was just frozen up! I didn't want to go to our Chevy Dealer....they charge ridiculous amount of $$$ just to look at a problem and solutions inevitably are done just to make more $$$. So glad I found this thread with Google...my faith in fellow man is restored as we needed the truck tomorrow and just didn't want to drive it in 4 LO on the highway. Thank you Andrew...hope you see this accolade! Al
Just sat in my works parking lot having a full blown panic attack, thinking I destroyed my bf's 08 silverado. Came across this advice, did it 3 times and BAM!! Back in 2wd. Y'all are a life saver! Thanks for the advice!!
Haley...Andrew started this discussion quite a while ago and I just found it last week. Glad you found it and fixed your problem just as I did. Amazing! I wonder how many Silverado drivers are spending big $$$ at their dealer getting this "problem" fixed. My wife needed the truck when it was stuck in 4WD and I wouldn't let her take it until I got it fixed. BAM is a good way to describe how it responds to this command. Good luck!
Thank you very much I had the same problem tonight hauling wood through my property. I did exactly what the early post said to do with Holden for high and shifting between gears and it popped out on my second try! Thank you very much and happy holidays to all
i got 08 chevy and it got stuck in 4low, glad i found this post before i went spending money, PNDR and im back riding again, thanks for the help
Interesting. I was stuck in 4Lo again yesterday 1/11/2019. I remembered how to solve that problem and it worked perfectly again. The interesting thing is that I got this email today about this problem... I know just coincidence but the smart phones nowadays you’re full of artificial intelligence…. But I never said anything out loud so the microphone didn’t pick up the problem is I was by myself and I didn’t look it up I just remembered from month or two back when it happened to me… Anyways best remedy I’ve ever had used for being stuck in 4Lo and really glad that you all have posted about it!
Alex, Andrew and all....My problem was fixed, temporarily, with the P-R-N-D-N-R solution. It worked OK, but 4 Lo was definitely getting worse and worse. Finally after 3 months screwing around with the "fix", my local mechanic solved the problem by replacing the entire dash switch mechanism ($88.00) I can now shift by just touching the button I want to use. He did say 4 LO is probably not ever really needed so I'll stick to 4 HI and 2 HI from now on. I also had a big problem with my ABS light staying on and the ABS brakes not working. Got so bad I occasionally had NO brakes at all (on icy roads)...so he also got to the bottom of that...ABS sensor in the left front wheel bearing. Again, not cheap, but less than the dealer would have charged. Closing in on 100,000 miles on my 2001 Silverado 1500. Guess I will keep it for a while longer now!
When you do this do you actually let it go in and out of all those gears like go forward in drive and reverse in r or just keep your foot on the break? Been tryin for about an hour nothing? Sorry for the ignorance on this issue I’ve never worked on my truck before also it was low on oil will this have any bearing on the issue? Hate to say it but I am a woman and I don’t have the background at all...
I tried to get out of low both ways. Foot on brake. Or moving a bit in reverse, to neutral, than to drive. It worked for awhile for me but finally wouldn't respond at all. My mechanic felt it was a problem with the switch and he replaced it. Works fine now. Good luck!
I have also heard that taking the battery cables off the battery and touching the two cables together for 15 seconds will often work as well. It drains whatever electricity is in the system and resets the computer (for push button 4wd).
When your truck or SUV is stuck on 4low. Just simply put your vehicle in Nuetral, then turn switch to 4H..you'll be able to switch to what ever you want from that point. Also note that when your vehicle is in 4 low it disables Stabilitrak or traction control.. Both cannot work at the same time. Once you switch out of 4low Stabilitrak will turn on again. Hope this helps.
Worked for me after a few tries on my 2011 Sierra. Thanks for the tip! What did we do before google?! Stay warm out there folks, Spring is coming soon!
Tried this morning on our 2011 Silverado and it worked. Thank you was getting ready to it in for service.
Worked great this morning. Thanks for saving us a trip to the car dealership!
I had this same problem today and I started freaking out. Found this string and tried it but didn’t work at first. Drove home and ate dinner then went out and tried again. Thankfully after I thought all hope was lost it switched to 4hi then was finally able to switch back to 2. Thanks for the help.
I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. I tried all the tips above and nothing worked. Finally tracked it down to the brake switch. There are 2 switches. One for the lights and the other for the cruise control. I was driving along when the transfer case jumped into 4 low although the front wheels were not engaged. Evidently it needs to be able to sense with the brake switch and loses it mind when it can't. Also let the dealer charge me a fortune to apply the firmware update for the transfer case. But the break switch was the problem. Switch is cheap and easy to replace.
I tried it on my 1999 Suburban with 229k miles. Worked first try. My only question is for how long? Great tip. Appreciate the help!
My 2005 Chevy Avalanche lights just cycle and I get the error message 'service 4wd", last night it happened I changed out the switch control, greased all the joints, drove in reverse and than hard braked, and shoke the hell out of each corner. Nothing worked until one day driving up the road, poof, it pooped back out. I had the same problem with a gmc yuckon. So I hope this works on mine. Its down by the barn, and we have had a lot of rain and its going no where until it drys up or I fix it
Boom. 6 years strong and the post is still helping. 2007 GMC Sierra had this problem for the 1st time. It took about 6 times to cycle through but it popped in 4 high and then to 2 x like no problem. Thanks!
Chevy 2000 1500 .My manual shift for my 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel grinds and won't engage in anything else. My RPMs and speedometer move but the truck won't.

I wanted to post on here for a similar issue I had. My truck = 2007 silverado 1500 5.3L V8 Z71. My truck has the dial for 4wd changes on the right of the steering column. Flipped it to auto because it was raining heavily. By the time I got to the store, rain had stopped so I tried to flip it into 2hi, the dial moved but nothing changed with the indicator light then bam "Service 4 wheel drive." I'm not a big car guy but I know enough to do most of my own work. When I started driving I could feel the truck was in 4hi just by its handling but once again, no matter how I turned that dial it never moved from auto. When I got home I found this thread with hope since it seemed to help so many people. Unfortunately the series fix of R-N-D-N-R did not fix my issue and I tried the steps 15 times. I tested the fuse, I looked at the wiring harness into the t-case, all looked well. I finally found a video on how the change the transfer control shifter ( and no that wasn't the fix). The disclaimer at the beginning of the video was the fix. Under the driver door just behind the wheel well you'll find a grounding wire hooked into two metal brackets welded into the frame. Now, mine had all of the wires wrapped into one single wire nut, but their picture showed two. If you see two check them both. They LOOKED good and not very coroded. I decided to try it anyway. There wasn't corrosion underneath the wire but a thick layer of grime. Low and behold, a wire brush on the metal bracket and the wire nut and a towel to finish the job, both parts went from black to silver. Reconnected it, started the truck and voala!! Put it into neutral, changed to 2hi and a test drive proved that did it. This grounding wire wasn't making a full ground due to grease buildup between it and the metal peice it was grounding to. Try anything and everything you see in these threads, something should get you there. Happy hunting yall!!

2012 Silverado 1500, 5.3L. I tried the R-N-D-N-R without success. Removed transfer case fuse. Removed both + and - cables from battery and touched them together to "clear computer". Reconnected battery cables and turned ignition switch to on but did not start truck. Re-installed transfer case fuse. Checked drive selector and it moved to 2wd. Test drove truck and confirmed it was in 2wd. Removed transfer case fuse to make sure it did not jump into any other drives. I'll take it to a mechanic and have them run more advanced diagnostics later this week.
Alright so ive tried the r,n,d combo and it didn't work with my Yukon. Ive replaced the actuator, checked wiring, fuses, and replaced the button switch on the dash and nothing is working. the service 4wd comes on the dash and depending on if my truck is having a good day or not, the 4lo will be lit up or itll show auto 4wd, 2hi. It bounces around but mainly stays in 4lo. Any suggestions?

I went past this step as I had already refurbished the motor / actuator and try shifting manually the gear that you turn to shift it in and out of four wheel turns but nothing happens. Did I finally lose my shift Fork? Note: the transfer case has been slipping into neutral for the past month and when I pulled it apart to diagnose the problem I found the shift Fork was Worn heavily.
Thank U Thank U Thank U. I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado. & it got stuck in 4WL & I just went back in forth from R-N-R & it came out too

We have a 2008 Silverado and we changed the transfer case today and all of the 4wd options worked until we put it in 4low and now it’s stuck. It did this on our last transfer case and we had a different t case motor as well. The r-n-d did not work but we did hear noise from it. Any other suggestions?
Bought a 2011 Av yesterday, and had the 4L problem today. 15 minutes of trying to get it o ui t of 4L, then I Googled and got this site. Tried the shifting cycle then N, and Great, it shifted out, no probs. Thanks.

I have a 2015 Silverado 1500 with about 55,000 miles and it's starting to not want to go into 4 Lo. Any advice as to what might be the cause and fix? I have been using 4 Low about 30 times a year to back up a steep driveway since I purchased the truck new. Thanks

My 4wL was stuck, i didn't know what to do in a snow storm. I tried for an hour to get it out. Seen this post & tried the R-N-D-N-R method while pushing 4hi, it popped & went in. Thank you so much, you saved Christmas for our family!

Mine is having the same problem but I’m hearing a grinding noise when I tried it so I stopped is that normal or what could this be
No need to shift into different gears- just into Neutral then press 2H or 4H - worked like a dream for me!
