First thing is to check the fuses. Then check to see if there is power getting back to the tail lights. A test light is handy for this. There would be a plugin under the truck in the back that the tail light assembly wires plug into, that would be a good starting point to check for power. A lot of times it is just because of the plugin connector is corroded and just needs cleaning.
