2005 1500 Silverado LTZ ext. cab check engine light electrical computer?

Asked by Guru9RN289 Aug 06, 2022 at 04:20 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 1500 Silverado LTZ ext. cab.  The check engine light came on
and has been on for years.  I have taken it to two different inspection stations
and they say its probably the electrical computer? They now refuse to pass it
in the state of NJ with the check engine light on.
With this problem I took it to two private station and they say it has to go to a
dealership for the problem.   I feel like this is going to break the bank

That old you don't need a dealer to fix it, any good independent shop will work.

If you clear the code can monitors be cleared before the CEL light comes back up ? In new york you're allowed one monitor to be up so you have that window of opportunity where the monitors clear and the CEL light hasn't come on .

CEL is normally caused by some error or failure that is detectable by the OBDII system. There should be an OBDII connector / plug under the dash (steering wheel area). Have someone read the error code(s) with an OBDII scanner (cheap meter at any store~ $25.00). First you should disconnect the battery for 2 minutes to clear the computer system and then reconnect after you connect the OBDII scanner to get the error code(s). Post the results to this forum for help from this knowledge base. It's worth $25.00 for the OBDII scanner to determine what is creating the CEL. It may be something simple. Probably is since you've been driving it this way for years.

Visit your local auto parts store and have them scan the computer for trouble codes. Most stores will do it for free. No need to disconnect the battery or anything. Just let them plug into it. You will get four digit codes beginning with the letter P. Once you have the codes post them here and we can help further. In NJ you can't pass inspection with the check engine light or service engine soon light on. Or if the light won't come on when the ignition is in the run position and the engine is not running. So get the codes and we'll go from there. Hope that helps! Jim
