Why does my 4x4 transmission go into neutral when the rpms go below 1000

Asked by Tater65 Dec 10, 2014 at 11:47 AM about the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2LT Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: General

I am driving along, the control button is selecting 2 high and when I reduce speed and
my RPMs go below 1000 the transmission switches to neutral. I come to a stop,
manually  put the truck into neutral push the transmission selection button to Auto 4x4
and after 2 or 3 seconds I select 2 high put the truck into drive and proceed.
Everything is fine until I reduce speed and RPMs and it happens again. When
switching I do hear it switch in the transfer case area.
