Automatic Transmission/transfer case noise

Asked by Cyote31 Mar 26, 2016 at 06:23 PM about the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 LS LB DRW 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Transmission or transfer case (not sure which) makes a
clicking/very light grinding noise. It's fine through 1st gear
then it starts making it very noticeably in 2nd, little in 3rd.
Not quite sure if it makes the noise in 4th or 5th. What
should I check to start troubleshooting this problem?

Note: my transfer case is stuck in neutral. I just checked both of the driveshafts while in neutral. Clicking noise is coming from transfer case.
