What type of things would I be noticing if the struts
need to be replaced?

You may notice thump noises when hitting bumps. You can also look for leaking. Gas at the strut shaft. It may appear. Discolored or wet. More drop in suspension under hard braking.

Any ballpark idea of cost to fix and how soon it.needs to be done. Recently widowed. KNOW NOTHING!!

You can purchase the strut and spring as one unit it costs more but is faster to replace. If your doing the front you need an alignment. Also. I would suggest Midas if you have them in your area. Both front with align would be around 450. Rear about 400. Ballpark. I do my own anD a strut spring unit runs around 150 each.
