It bothers me that you would attempt to do a "major (brake) overhaul", but have no idea of the kind of brake fluid to use, and wouldn't think to ask for such information at your local Ford dealership/repair shop or auto parts retailer (many of the latter have online searches for parts and supplies, including fluids). If you can't figure out the simplest thing, maybe you shouldn't do anything more complicated. Regardless, the correct brake fluid for that year, make, and model, is DOT-3.

Dot 3 is the one to use. Keep the container tightly sealed when not in use, and don't leave it open unless you are using it right then. It absorbs water quickly which degrades it. The previous answer is quite rude, but that is to be expected on the internet :) Good luck to everyone who does their own vehicle repair and maintenance.

It also bothers me that you think you should add brake fluid just because your reservoir is low.
