My 93 Crown Vic is running very rough and backfires when accelerating sometimes. What is wrong?

How long since your last major tune up?

1993...what engine? ..does it have a distributor or coil pack(s)? If it has a distributor the timing may be way too advanced. The backfiring is unburnt fuel in the combustion chamber igniting before it's supposed to. Put a timing light on it, and even without knowing what engine you can't go wrong setting it at 6 to 8 BTDC
4.6 with distributor I think. Looked up the car. Turn distributor until it idles as high as it will go, then turn it counter-clockwise until the idle slows down a little bit. Re- tighten hold-down bolt (I forgot to say loosen first)
