Check for a clogged catalyst converter or muffler. Do this test at night start vehicle and let idle for about 5 minutes look under vehicle at converter and muffler if either one starts to glow cherry red it is clogged. Most of the time it is the converter.

Since it dies out when it happens, is you check engine light not on? If so get it scanned.
@ firebired338 is there a way to unclog it both converters turned fire red

Also with the cats turning red be sure to check cool packs prior too replacing cats. They dont turn red because there clogged, they will turn red due to misfire which will send unburned fuel down exhaust into them and it will ignite inside the cat.if cats are clogged the engine will run until they get hot enough to restrict more flow which by this time your trying to pull out on the road 10-20 minutes from your house and the speed will drop drastically to where it's crawling and stalled. Take a drill and drill some holes through the cats helps too diagnose it or pull an o2 sensor before the cats.
