why is my 2008 pushing to much voltage

put in new alltanator and because of to much juice fried that one

Just happened to my 2005. However, something in electrical triggered my battery of just a month old to run at 17V, frying my alternator. Outta nowhere.

They are replacing alternator right now. I've also heard that disconnecting the Smart Charge wire keeps it regulated?
