Transmission won't engage

My 2006 ford escape will move if it is cool. As soon as I let
off the gas or touch the brakes it disengages and will not
move. If I shut it off and wait a few minutes it will be ok
until I let off the gas or touch the brake again?  Is it the
pump or torque converter?

Hard to say without a proper diagnosis. It could be a solenoid/sensor or something internal to the transmission. Have a transmission proof mechanic check it out before you start replacing parts.
