How do I use overdrive in a very uphill/downhill area?

I recently bought an '06 Escape.  I've never driven a vehicle with overdrive before, and I live in an area with all steep hills, either uphill or downhill to get anywhere.  How do I use overdrive economically, without using too much gas?

just use overdrive when its a steep hill . Never use it on a down hill or on a regular rode. All your going to do is cause more wear on your tranny. Once you see a steep hill. try to gain some speed and once your car is on the hill and you fell the car is getting weaker hit the over drive buton. That will give you more power to get up.

I have an automatic 2013 escape and I can’t find the overdrive button I do however have a sport mode. No overdrive mode though. Is there something I am missing. I am towing for about 3k miles and would like to turn it off. Thanks In advance.
