I have a "whomp/whomp" type noise coming from my front driver side wheel. It can be heard starting at about 30mph and peaks in loudness at about 50mph.

Asked by cradock Jun 12, 2012 at 07:50 PM about the 2004 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the wheel bearing but it had no effect.  Have owned the vehicle for 3 years and the noise has been increasing gradually.  Anyone have an idea of what could be the cause of the noise and is it something that must be corrected?  Ralph

I agree with Tom. there are many things that can go wrong with tires. You may even have a bulge on the tire somewhere.

Try rotating the tires, and see if the sound moves,or goes away..Also,It wouldnt hurt,to replace the rotors-as a warped one, will make that sound,also.....

I may have had this exact problem...check your tires for cupping on the outer edge. My problem ended up being worn struts. My noise was also the front drivers side. Rotating the tires did move the sound to the rear so it was more tolerable until I got new tires. My Expedition only had 70,000 miles on it when I replaced my struts. Got new tires 10,000 miles later and the noise was gone. At 120,000 the noise is still gone and no cupping on my tires. Ford struts, shocks, and front end parts tend to wear out sooner than other car makers. I learned this from my 1999 Expedition and again on my 2005 Mustang.
