can I put a engine from a Ford Explorer 2004 XLT into a 2001 XLT

V6 to V6 SOHC engine, yes. You will have to research to see if any additional sensors have to be eliminated/installed and check PCM for any changes. Make sure the PCM is the same for both vehicles, else take it along with the engine.

Also, make sure you advise the mechanic doing work on the installed engine it is a 2004 V6. The engine went through many revisions during it's lifetime. Many parts are not interchangeable.
