2002 Ford Explorer AC works great for 15-20 minutes

Asked by flrick Apr 06, 2015 at 05:24 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer

Question type: General

AC blows cold until the engine temperature comes up to normal, and I have to sit in traffic.
Then the AC will go off for a while.  When I clear traffic and get moving, it comes back on
by itself.  It seems like the hotter it is outside, the more it will do this.  Any ideas?

Sounds like you may have a Freon leak. The refrigerant does not evaporate out of the system, it leaks out. Try this, start the car and get it up to operating temp. Park it in front of the house and let it idle. If the ac compressor cycles on and off real fast you are probably low on refrigerant.
