2002 Ford Explorer Motor

I bought a new motor for my 2002 Ford Explorer off of carplanet... I typed in the number off the new motor and it came up a 5/25/01, but the old motor i had to take out was a 2/09/02.  Everything lined up and hooked up correctly, but the starter is not connecting with the fly wheel. the starter is working correctly so I'm wondering if I need a different starter... I'm just lost.
