how to change an oil pump 2002 4.6 explorer

BIG job. Why would you want to do that? Drop the oil pan and remove the timing chains. You better get a manual to get the exact procedure so you don't mess up the valves if and when you turn the crank without the timing chains on it. I'd rather change the whole motor. If oil pressure is your concern - check the pressure with a gauge first. Ford senders are notorious for going bad.
Here is step 1. It should answer your question and have you think of an alternative. "Remove the engine from the vehicle." At tracy said, that may be the easiest part. With two cam chains on the V6, hope you have all the special tools required just to remove the chains, guides, and to install them correctly.
Is it possible to change oil pump to free my motor up
My motor runs very quiet. But oil pump locked up motor. How do you free motor up? Can I just change oil pump?
The oil pump can be changed out but, if your motor is locked-up, it's time for a new motor. No quick fix there.

The reason the motors locked up is the nylon timing chain guide's broke into pieces and plugged the oil return pickup, this cause's no oil flow to the motor which cause's pump failure followed immediately by complete engine failure. (A) change the motor or (b) play taps on the horn and buy a new ride. PS, there are 3 timing chains on the 4.0 motor for 3 production years.
I am having the same issue my 02 explorer 4.6l v8 w close to 200k on it just lost oil pressure yesterday. The gauge kept going to low then back to normal. I went and picked my wife up because I thought the samething the oil pressure switch was messing up. But the truck now sounds like a diesel and it stalled on me twice on the way home. I'm sure there possibly could be some damage to the engine now. But am trying to figure out if I should even attempt to replace the oil pump as I know it's a big job and I'm not sure what else i should look at or replace as well should i go that route if anyone can give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it.
