2002 Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
When I switch the hot/cold dial to hot, there is a constant clicking under the dashboard. I assume this is the door that allows air from the heater coil to enter the cabin blower. The noise stops when the dial is turned to cold, and starts again when the dial is switched to hot. Also I get no hot air due to this. I occasionally get hot air when the gate closes...which is rarely. How to replace the part....and which part?

what is happening is the gears on the heat blend door motor are stripped, the part is inexpensive and I think it is located on the drivers side up by the gas pedal, its tight but doable if you take your time
It the actuator as described by Steven. It is in the location described. It is a plastic electric motor about the size of a cigarette box. The hears are made of plastic, and as one breaks you hear the click. When two or more break you hear nothing, and you cannot redirect the air, it's stuck wherever it lands. The part is about fifty bucks. The unfortunate part is the majority of the dash has to come out to replace it. Check the net, you'll find a u-tube of it being done. It's a royal pain.
we did one a few months back can be done without removal of too much, might of taken a hour or less, its just a pain to get at the 8mm bolts but take your time and its doable, maybe watch a few vids on utube
Thanks Steve and OJ, I did some research and ordered the part. Now I need someone to do my college paper while I install it. Woo Hoo!! Steve, did you find it necessary to use a ratchet wrench to take off the 8mm bolts?
