Why do you think of say that a blown head gasket prevents the heater from blowing air?

If you're heater isn't working, that's not a head gasket. It's likely your heater core.

Those year Explorers are known for the blend door actuator motor going out. Fifty buck part but the dash has to come out to replace it. Check the net, there is a manual workaround involving an electric cable tie, drilling a small hole, and attaching it.
