Check Gage Light

Asked by Nikkig757 Dec 06, 2018 at 11:41 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer XLS 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2002 ford explorer check gage light comes on and
the gas needle goes to empty, there is at least a
half tank of gas. I noticed today that the light come
on after the car has warmed up. The car isn't
overheating the temperature gage stays in the
middle. This happens if the heat or air is on or off,
also, the heat and air sitll work after this happens.
The car still runs well when all of this is happening.
I recently had an inspection and the mechanic
informed me that the thermostst housing is
leaking. I checked the coolant and it was low, but i
did not see any moisture around the housing.  I
filIed the  coolant reservoir to the recommended
level and everything was fine for a short time but
then the check gage light came on again after i
drove about five miles. I connected my diagnostic
tool to check the codes, there were 0 failures. I am
going to check the coolant level in the morning to
see if it has gone down again. Also, I did notice the
smell of antifreeze when I got out of my car
tonight. Someone please help me this issue, it is
driving me insane.

Guage doesnt matter if its fuel. Select the odometer reset button and switch to miles. Every time you fill it reset miles driven to zero. Then drive 300 miles approx and fill it again. Truck drives about 340 or so on a full tank so just fill it every 300 and reset. I have been doing this for five years without problem.

The fuel level sending unit in the tank is probably going bad.

Fill it And u can go 300 miles. Reset odometer to zero when u fill. Rinse repeat. Until such time as u can afford to fix the fuel sending unit. For me it has been on my todo list for 5 years and nearly 40,000 miles. Other things such as full coolant flush. New hoses and thermostat. You know things of importance keep taking precedence. If you go sometimes 325 miles it will still make it. I just set the safe zone around 300 miles so I never run out. Longest I have gone is 340 and made it ok on full tank. But that was a nail biter

I agree the easiest work around is to rest the trip odometer, this is how I keep my need for gas on my motorcycle. It has no fuel gauge. If you want tru to fix it look at dash instrument panel “ anti slosh model” replacement or hack to by pass on you tube, or get another module from a junkyard. But dash instrument panel removal is not hard, just time consuming.good luck.
