When idling in driveway, turn ac on high and car dies. While driving, turn on ac and motor tries to stall. Is it the ac unit?

Runs fine with ac off. Current weather is over 100 degrees outside.

check the throttle body and idle air control valve. carbon build up can restrict air flow and once more load is introduced from the a/c compressor then it may not be enough air flow to keep the motor running.

Start the engine and have someone watch the AC clutch when you turn the AC on. You may have a compressor, clutch or bearing failing. Then I'd look at what kbro suggests.

Krso is probably right on. My 2003 was acting like that at idle, without the a/c on. Cleaned the throttle body completely and it stopped the problem.

IAC cleaned out, couple sprits in the throttle body and my 2002 Escape runs like a champ. Had been idleing to motor stop at startup and when I put the ac on when driving.
