2002 Ford Explorer XLT - No Oil Pressure

Asked by Robert Jan 09, 2014 at 03:43 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car was running fine. Was parked in driveway during this recent cold wave. Two days of 0
degrees Fahrenheit. Went to start car which it did but check gauge light came on and oil
pressure gauge read zero. What could have happened? Cracked block, problem with oil
pump? Checked oil and it was ok and there was nothing leaking underneath.

Fords have had issues with oil pressure senders since the 80's. If it runs ok without noise - try the $10 sender replacement. Have the right viscosity oil in it?

I started it several times and seemed to sound normal but hard to tell. What kind of noise should I be listening for?

metal to metal knocking the longer it runs the louder it will get. sounds like the sending unit if you hear no knocking because it wont take long to start knocking after the start. hope this helps

In my case when the weather warmed up the oil pressure returned to normal so the pump must have been frozen or the oil congealed to the point where it would not flow. Thanks for all of your replies.

My 2002 Ford explorer xlt 6.0 did exactly that today, I drive it earlier today and all was fine, then I start it up and see that the check gague light has come on. I heard loud noise coming from the engine, and saw the oil gague hadn't moved. I checked the oil (I had just had it changed a month ago) it's still full... Any ideas what's wrong... Have I lost my engine???

If the problem is not fixed already I would have it towed to your mechanic and let them diagnose the problem. Would not try to start it again or drive it if in the same condition you described. How many miles do you have on the car? Any puddles under the car? Hopefully it is a simple fix. Bob

I just had my serpentine belt and and retention pulley replaced now my high temp light comes on and when I try to drive it a half a block it cuts f I wait five minutes and it restarts. This stuff didnt happen until those two things were changed. They reason I got them changed is because my belt broke. It's a little Lord and smoking a little. This didn't happen until I got those thing fixed. Could I be dealing a crook that trying to get more money? Please get!
