2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 tyranny problem

Asked by Steelhorse Mar 20, 2016 at 09:28 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Just bought it cheap with 207k miles, looks great runs
great, then after about one week, the transmission is
slipping and the od light blinking along with door ajar and
brake light stays on. Found a family owned transmission
shop who advised it could be as much as 2600 to rebuild.
Dies that sound reasonable?  Haven't taken it in yet.

Before you decide, check into a re-manufactured tranny from a major concern, it may not be that much expensive and they usually offer a five year 100K warranty. It may be worth the extra expense.

Also, transmissions of that vintage, which were used in a lot of Ford vehicles, experienced servo bore leakage.

Jasper, etc. Any national company which offers long warranties with mileage? There are retailers all over the U.S. You'll have to contact one in your area for a price.
