Rear end makes loud bang sound

Asked by Joshua Aug 21, 2017 at 11:40 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 ford explorer xlt 4wd makes a big bang sound in
the rear end when taking off from stop kinda like i have
been rear ended. I was wondering what that could be? I
have been told the rack and pinion and is this worth fixing?
It has 200,000 plus miles on it but has ran like a dream with
minimal fixes and I only paid 1,500 for it.

Rack and pinion is in the front. You might have a bad u-joint, differential (they have clutches that can go bad), or a torque converter lockup. If it is the rack, expect to pay at least 1500-2000. A TC solenoid is part of the trans valve body and can be replaced without dropping the trans, but if it's the TC or trans itself, you have to drop it and very expensive. A computer diagnostic will check all solenoids.
