Heat in rear but not in front in 2002 Ford Explorer

Asked by jesserjo Oct 27, 2017 at 08:10 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The heat is blowing out in the rear but only
blowing out cold air in the front and when
the dial is turned to heat it makes a clicking
sound like a clock. It's still blowing air just
not hot air. What could this be if it is
working just fine in the rear?

I'm suspicious of it being the front blend door actuator, stripped plastic gears and such often click when they're worn but there is always the possibility that the blend door itself (looks like a flap) is stuck causing the actuator to skip.

Your vehicle has two heater cores, obviously your rear one is working fine, the front one has a problem with either the blend door actuator or the blend door itself, as poster above states.
