I googled the 2002 Explorers, AFTER I bought it, and found it was the worst year. Everything that the article said would go wrong, did go wrong. Other than that, it's been pretty dependable. Testimonial to what Tom mentioned above, the transmission may take a dive around 90,000 miles. This is the third Explorer for me, and that's about when they give you problems.

My explorers are the 96 - 99 - and 2003. The tranny went out in the 96 and 99 at about 60K. My tranny guy told me to bring them back every 40K for a fluid and filter change, I did. The 96 and 99 now have over 200K and the tranny is perking along great. The 2003 has had the fluid changed every 40K since new. Still doing great with over 120K miles. Forget the owners manual bull about every 90K change. Spend the 80 bucks for an oil change.

I have this model for more than 2 years, so far nothing went wrong, again as mentioned earlier that it all depends on previous owners, how the vehicle was driven. When I bought, I just have to change the radiator, as inspection showed that there was a crack, and that might be due to harsh weather here in Kuwait. Good luck.

I had to change my transmission at 100k, but I wan't changing the fluid as I should. I now change it every 40K and it is running fine. Has 60K on it now. Had to change the radiator with a cracked neck (made of plastic) which was a common problem.
