Why does it feel like my 2006 Ford Explorer is binding up when turning?

Asked by scoldy2799 Nov 29, 2015 at 07:27 AM about the 2006 Ford Explorer XLT V6 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2006 Ford Explorer XLT, 125K,  had tranny rebuilt 2k ago, just had front differential replaced due to metal shavings found in it, partly due to binding up when turning at start-up. Prior to that, had tires rotated, mechanic says problem is due to difference in tread wear, maybe 2-3 32's difference.

Is it stuck in 4 wheel drive. If it is 4 wheel drive and you turn sharply on dry pavement it will jump, jerk and act like something is wrong.

No, it's in "Auto". I have a jeep that when it's "locked" in 4-wheel drive and you take a turn it jumps. This is acting the same way.

This evening, I pulled the Explorer out of the garage and it didn't bind up at all. Could it be the lubricant that the merchanic put in it? He said it was synthetic but I know that Ford is pretty specific about what fluids to put in.

My mechanic thinks that something is wrong with the transfer case. It's just disheartening, first the transmission, then the front differential, now he's thinking the transfer case. When does it end? Is my mechanic chasing his tail?
