Twin turbo installation on my 1993 v8 Ford Thunderbird. What to do?

Asked by Justin Dec 24, 2014 at 09:57 PM about the 1993 Ford Thunderbird LX RWD

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 1993 v8 Ford Thunderbird. I
love the car and I am planning on
keeping it. A few upgrades will be
done to it, but the main one is what I
have questions about. The 93
Thunderbirds have a tiny engine
compartment. It was even hard for
me to just change the harmonic
balancer on it. Would putting in a
twin turbo kit on it be possible? What
all do I need to upgrade the engine to
be able to handle all that extra Hp?
And what modifications, if necessary,
will need to be done on body work to
get them to fit onto the engine?

First question, do you live in a state where you can modify the engine and pass the smog checks? Do the twin turbo kits come with a way of reprogramming the ECM? You would need to put a shift kit or do valve body modifications to the transmission if it's an automatic. Also be nice to get a torque converter with a higher stall speed

NOX is definately cheapest way to go but this engine is 20 years old. You don't say anything about miles or condition. Are you sure it can handle any real mods? Be careful.

A shift kit will help you put more power to the ground because from the factory they set automatic transmission to slip so the ride is smoother. With a shift kit the shifts will be firmer and quicker. Apparently you have a 5R55S transmission, so here a place that sells shift kit. (there are plenty, even on ebay) http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/Valve_Body_Kits_s/11801.htm If you go up in engine size and get the AODE or 4R70W, then you can do the J Mod https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbIAKfhrdV0

The engine has about 85k miles on it. I didn't know if the engine could handle it so I was going to either put a new crate engine in or rebuild it, haven't decided yet. Thanks guys for the information keep it coming. Y'all are helping me out more than y'all know! (:
