It's a transmission error. Could be the fluiid (level/quality), could be tge wiring, could be faulty solenoid valve...
P0961 - Pressure Control Solenoid 'A' Control Circuit Range/Performance...Possible causes; Faulty Pressure Control Solenoid 'A', Pressure Control Solenoid 'A' harness is open or shorted, Pressure Control Solenoid 'A' circuit poor electrical connection...Possible symptoms; Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)... P0961 Description; The Pressure Control (PC) Solenoid Valve an electronic pressure regulator that controls transmission line pressure based on current flow through its coil windings. As current flow is increased, the magnetic field produced by the coil moves the solenoid’s plunger further away from the exhaust port. Opening the exhaust port decreases the output fluid pressure regulated by the PC solenoid valve, which ultimately decreases line pressure. The line pressure solenoid valve regulates the oil pump discharge pressure to suit the driving condition in response to a signal sent from the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

There is no engine light on - only the traction control lite. This is the only code which registers - P0961.
Well that is what the code means. I would take it to a transmission shop for proper diagnosis. It just sounds like a pressure solenoid. When anything slips with the drive line or something is wrong, the traction control can pick it up and throw a code.

I did forget to mention that there is no front wheel drive with this code. Does this make a difference?
No, but a code is a code indicating something wrong. Were the ABS codes checked? That usually coincides with the traction control light.

No. Is this something that my husband can do or does it need to be taken to a dealer?
This should go to a transmission shop for repair.

Per the ford dealer, it is the pressure control solenoid. However, they cannot find the replacement solenoid in their database. Do you have any idea where this can be ordered?
I just did some searching but didn't come up with anything. May have to check with that trany shop.
While I was driving my Trac control with a light looking like a and saying transmission error came on turned car off then car wouldn't come on again
