Is your tailpipe emmitting much smoke? If so, a ring job might be in order, with the accompanying gaskets, seals, etc. If oil is presenting on the motor itself, could be valve cover gasket or head gasket.
How much oil do you consider to be too much? 1 quart every 600 miles is a lot but not necessarily a concern (according to Ford). I don't agree - that's a lot. A couple of things to consider: Has the engine ever been severely overheated and repaired (rings)? Is there smoke from the tail pipe on initial start-up or acceleration (valve guides)? Is there oil on the tailgate and tail lights(verifies burning oil) ? Oil spots on the driveway? Are you a Hot-Rod? Continual high RPMs will consume oil too. Rear main seal failures are fairly easy to spot since the Rear Main Seal only leaks when the engine is off. Drip, drip, drip at the bell housing. The valve cover on this engine is plastic and the "gasket" is really a silicone insert with metal eyelets. They fail but not too often. So - how much oil does it use?
