engine rotation

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I just put a used engine in my ranger. Checking the rotation manuall by crankshaft pulley I can only rotate engine about 300 degrees and it stops. I can then rotate it backwards but it will stop again at 300 degrees. Any ideas??

You are probably hitting the compression stroke of one of the cylinders. It should leak pressure slowly and allow you to continue. You could also take out all of the spark plus to eliminate the compression...allowing it to rotate 100%. Check your old engine to see if it does that. It almost sounds like what happens when a timing belt or chain breaks on an interference engine. I'm not sure what engine you have, or if your engine is an interference engine. Post your engine specs and maybe someone can tell us.

All spark plugs are removed. It is a 2.3l. but will not turn a complete rotation. It has a dead stop at about 300 degrees in either direction.

Your engine has a timing chain, and it is a non-interference engine. That means it is unlikely the timing chain has failed, and if it did fail, it will not ruin the engine. However, any part can fail and it's possible the chain did fail and has bunched up somewhere causing things to bind. Take the timing chain cover off and have a look. See it the cams and crankshaft turns. If it came from a salvage yard, try to swap it out or see if they can explain what happened. I like to hear an engine run before buying it.
