My 2002 Ford Taurus has a new starter, starts but makes a clanging noise

Starter new starts but clanging noise or grinding

It could be a number of things. If you had it done at a shop take it back right away. if not then it could be the incorrect part for your application, It could be flawed from the factory, it could just be loose or you could need a new flex-plate. The flex-plate is the gear the the starter motor uses to turn the engine over and they wear over time.

Check the starter drive to flywheel ring gear clearance as shown in the picture with a round feeler gauge in between the gear teeth. Sounds like the starter is either too close or too far away from the flywheel. Hope that helps! Jim
