The coolant sensor in the 2000 ford Taurus is located on the bottom of the coolant reservoir. so i would imagine it is the same for 2002 You will see two wire connector protruding towards the fender-side. It is built into the reservoir tank bottom so if it needs a replacement the whole unit has to be replaced.

see, I'm not qualified. my knowledge base is from 93-96... serves me right for guessin'
Your Taurus has two coolant temp sensors, one that is the sending unit for the instrument cluster gauge, and one that is for the cooling fan and the PCM.

thanks once again DavidH25...you are always the one in my book~
Both sensors on Ford Taurus 2000 is located beside the thermostat,on the driver side of the engine. The one with two wires is the temp sensor. The one with one wire is the instrument cluster one for the temp gauge.
