fast idle when first starting with battery warning light on

Asked by Guy Jun 10, 2017 at 02:53 PM about the 2002 Ford Taurus SE Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

when i first start the taurus, 2002, 3.0 it runs fast idle and the charging system
warning light is on.  Sometimes I can kick it down to normal idle 600-700 rpm,
and the light will go off.  sometime after i drive it a mile or so the idle kicks
down and the warning light goes off.

I'd say the alternator may be on it's way out but would check output voltage at alternator first. Engine may be trying to compensate. Other things I would do is to clean the throttle body and load test the battery. These two things (battery/alt) seem to go around the same time. Nothing worse that a weak battery especially during the cold months. Good Luck!
