2004 Taurus SEL Check Engine Lght

I get the 420 transmission check engine light code.  However, when I unplug
the battery to turn it off, it takes 227 miles of driving to come back on.  Does
the fact that it takes so long to come back on mean anything useful?

Turning off the check engine light by disconnecting the battery doesn't fix the problem so it came back on in 227 miles when the fault was again detected and code was set. Code P0420 means there is a malfunction related to the catalytic converter or oxygen sensors. Have it checked out and repaired. Probably an oxygen sensor at fault. Google for more information.
