How do I replace a fuel pump on my son's 2005 ford taurus?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
He's broke and I said I'd do the work for him. I generally fix my own cars and can do quite a bit on my own. Some
direction on this one though is definitely needed....

sadly, you're going to either have to drop the tank, or if you look in the trunk can see an access portal for which to extract the fuel pump. You may want to drain the tank empty, if you need to drop the tank out of the vehicle. (typical, you get used to it) but would say it is best to have a shop that is equipped to deal with splashes of gasoline and wll do in short order-
I changed the tank on my Olds. It wasn't fun but it can be done in the driveway (for ventilation). I put the rear on ramps and removed the rubber filler tube. Insert a hose and siphon out the remaining gas. While your waiting for the gas, squirt the tank strap bolts with penetrating oil. You can try to break them free. I cut a couple lengths of all thread rod to use as long bolts for installing the tank. Get them in place and tighten the nuts to draw the tank up. --- I found this set of instructions - http://www.taurusclub.com/forum/98-solutions-common-problems-how- articles/84862-replacing-sending-unit.html
You absolutely can do it yourself. I did one on a similar Taurus. It is a PITA and you most definitely do have to drop the tank. I know I had directions somewhere. I will try to find the link.

Change the fuel filter too while you're under there. Also INSPECT YOUR BRAKE LINES. When I had my buddy's up in the air I found his brake lines deteriorated badly and despite my warnings he kept driving it like that until his brakes failed. Fortunately no one hurt. They simply rust on these cars..
mine went bad on my 03 taurus station wagon. I ordered a new fuel pump then went to repair garage near my home. They dropped the tank and replaced fuel pump with part i provided for 120 bucks . Way worth that for me not to do ! also had a little over a tank of gas in the tank. fuel pump i bought was a Motorcraft one from rockauto was a total of 228 delivered to my home .so for 348 i got the f Pump replaced . reasonable price for the work . might could do cheaper if you bought a cheaper Fueln pump their are some . I like as close to what was on the car myself as possible. Figure if the originals lasted so long try to replace with originals better .
