I have a 2004 tbird. What gear should I be in for driving around town (which includes frwy going up to 70).
Asked by sparklesusan Dec 30, 2014 at 12:44 PM about the 2004 Ford Thunderbird Deluxe RWD
Question type: General
It has automatic trans with Park at the top, then R, N, D5 and D4 at the bottom. When
I'm driving around town (that includes frwy), should I be in 4th or 5th? Guy at dealership
says 4th, but it sounds like its laboring and the RPM's are at about 3.5 when I go faster
than 45 mph.
Thanks Susan

what does your owners manual say ? That should be the last word for trans operation unless there is a manufacturer bulletin. If a bulletin superceded the book, you would not be notified unless there was a recall and ford knew how to find you. (of course recalls are for safety) If I still had questions ? I would demonstrate the vehicle operation for the trans specialist during a road test to be sure that he/ she experienced the vehicle's operation.

D5, the car will take care of itself. D4 locks out overdrive for towing or pulling a grade.
Thanks, tbuckit, owners manual and trans man be damd, They always have a big bill for you, but when do they fix or correct or counsel? effectively, that is. I notice some of these new trans gear patterns, you can go by feel. if it feels too low to me I shift up. That 3500rpm on the hiway is sayin sumthin.
