Prius hybrid battery mountain drivinh

Asked by Jabariwest Feb 28, 2020 at 08:07 AM about the 2007 Toyota Prius Touring FWD

Question type: General

I drove 1800 miles from VA to Taos NM in 2007 Prius. My battery was fabulous
up till I had to climb to 8000 feet. I replaced the hybrid 4 years ago with after
market battery. At times the battery bars would go to purple then back to 3 or 4
blue bars while climbing the mountain. It regenerates fairly quickly when on
flatter and down hill to green briefly. The quick depletion is a serious concern
and the quick regeneration on the downhills. It is probably going bad again, or
the 2007 Prius just isn't happy climbing steep 1000 feet climbs. BTW the
speeds were 40 mph (speed limits) no problems. Any ideas?

The whole idea of a hybrid is charging the battery with waste energy such as going down hill or braking. Going uphill a long distance apparently exceeded the small amount of energy in the battery.
