How do i tell the difference between atf and gear lube?

I bought a 1992 ford ranger xlt 4cyl 5 speed. Since ive had
it i put 14,000 mi on it. The trans fluid is low and i figured id
just flush it and top it off wirh new. But i dont wanna blow
my tranny. It now has 120xxx mi. I cant reach the previous
owner.

ATF is normally red and a thin viscosity. Gear oil is much heavier and will be amber or a dark brown color. It also stinks.
